ABOUT ESPRESSO AND OUR CAPSULES

First, espresso is not a roasting method, it does not refer to a bean or a blend. It is a method of preparing coffee by using pressurized hot water, forced over finely ground coffee, to produce a concentrated coffee with a deep, robust flavor. For many coffee drinkers, espresso is the very essence of the coffee bean, in its most pure form. It was also the first instant coffee, originally designed as something that could be quickly prepared, translated literally from Italian, “espresso” means express!

Meant to be enjoyed as a quick shot, a quick jolt, a traditional espresso drink is characterized by its small size and its silky crema which holds the aromatics longer, more aromatic, and more intense than your typical cup of Joe. Those of you that have tried to make a café quality espresso at home know, not an easy feat to accomplish! Now, Barrie House has a way for you to match the café espresso experience in your home. We have spent years perfecting our espresso blends, perfecting the grind, and finally to an Aluminum capsule with greater sustainability, greater protection, and better performance. All this with the goal to help you prepare that perfect espresso, at home.

HOW OUR COFFEE IS ROASTED

Because coffee can differ by variety, elevation, and processing, all coffee cannot be roasted the same. Because of this, the roast is the most important part of producing a really good coffee. Like all great family secrets, the art of roasting our specialty coffee has been passed down from one generation to the next. Family-owned since 1934 Barrie House has perfected the art of coffee roasting with these Nespresso compatible capsules in a style reminiscent of old-world Italian espressos We roast our premium coffee beans in vintage roasters with a novel drum design. This allows for better airflow and reduces the risk of over-roasting, which can cause a burnt flavor. Different compounds are developed during this roasting process at different times. By controlling the chemical reactions taking place in the bean during the roast, we can change or determine the flavors in the final cup!

Dark Roasts – Our Dark roast coffees have (obviously) been roasted longer than other types, resulting in a darker bean and a more full-bodied taste. This longer roast time curbs bright flavors and reduces the caffeine, so dark roast coffee is often less sour and more bitter than a lighter roast.

Medium Roasts – Our Medium Roast start to roast out some of the most subtle flavors. As well as showcasing the distinctive qualities of the bean’s origin, it will also bring up caramelization and body.

Blending – Prior to roasting, our roastmasters carefully blend the roasted beans to achieve the desired flavor profile. Once locked in, we duplicate that flavor profile for each of our unique Espresso offerings perfectly, every time.

WHAT is fair trade?

At its simplest, Fair Trade coffee means that coffee farmers get a fair deal for their hard work. This translates into better prices and wages for farmers, safer working conditions for producers, and better protection of the environment. In addition, Fair Trade pricing specifically designates funds to invest in much-needed local community projects including education, construction and infrastructure, health care, and clean water.

INTRODUCING: the Aluminum capsule

Barrie House is proud to announce our new line of Aluminum Nespresso® compatible capsules.

WHY ALUMINUM?

TASTE

An aluminum capsule is the best way to seal in aroma and flavor. It perfectly protects our coffee from light, moisture, and oxygen, ensuring that the taste and aroma remain sealed in until you brew the capsule.

FUNCTION

Aluminum capsules also offer superior functionality, they do not crack, melt, or become deformed, which can occur with plastic capsules. Our capsules fit all Nespresso® original machines, which were specially designed to take aluminum capsules.

recyclability

Aluminum is fully recyclable, which is great when it comes to the environment. It can be recycled over and over, without losing its material properties.

From NYC? Easy to recycle!

In any NYC borough, just put your used Nespresso capsules directly in your curbside recycling bin dedicated to metal, glass and plastic. No need for a recycling bag!

CAPPUCCINO

INGREDIENTS:
• 1 serving of espresso or strong coffee
• 6 ounces of milk
• Sugar to taste
DIRECTIONS:
Brew a really strong cup of coffee or espresso.

Pour 6 ounces cold milk in milk frother and froth until rich and velvety. Or, heat the milk on the stove or in the microwave until steaming, and beat it with a whisk. You want to get tiny bubbles

Slowly add the hot milk to your coffee and lay the frothed floating on top.

Traditionally, it will be equal parts coffee, milk and froth.

café latte

INGREDIENTS:
• 1 serving of espresso or dark roast coffee
• 6 ounces of milk
• Sugar to taste
DIRECTIONS:
Brew a really strong cup of coffee or espresso.

Pour 6 ounces cold milk in milk frother and froth until rich and velvety. Or, heat the milk on the stove or in the microwave until steaming, and beat it with a whisk. You want to get tiny bubbles

Use a spoon to retain the microbubbles on top of the steamed milk and pour the bottom 2/3 of the steamed milk into the cup.

Top the latte with the remaining bubbles by gently pouring or spooning them on top of the steamed milk.

Affogato

INGREDIENTS:
Ingredients:
• 1 serving of espresso or dark roast coffee
• Gelato or rich ice cream
DIRECTIONS:
A traditional Affogato is made with vanilla gelato covered (drowned) with espresso.

Barrie House dark roasts work best but a strong brew of any roast will work.

First, brew a cup of espresso or any dark roast coffee.  Next, scoop ice cream into a  bowl or cup.  Then,  drizzle a small amount of hot coffee onto the ice cream, just enough to flavor the ice cream.  It will melt slightly creating an amazing coffee/ice cream combo.

Keep the rest of the coffee handy to add more as needed.

Americano

INGREDIENTS:
• 1-2 servings of hot espresso, based on preference of strength
• Hot water
DIRECTIONS:
In a cup filled 2/3 of the way with hot water, steadily pour in a single or double espresso.

By pouring the espresso on top of the hot water, the heat from the water will not scorch the freshly brewed espresso - letting it retain the crema for a foamier, creamier feeling drink.

Con panna

INGREDIENTS:
• 1-2 servings of hot espresso, based on preference of strength
• 2 Tbs of Whipped Cream, sweetened or unsweetened,
depending on taste
DIRECTIONS:
A traditional Con Panna is served in a demitasse cup but
any small glass or cup will do.

Float whipped cream on top of a freshly brewed espresso and enjoy!

mocha

INGREDIENTS:
• 1 shot freshly brewed espresso
• 6 ounces of milk
• 1 ounce cocoa powder or 1 capsule Barrie House Hot Cocoa
• Sugar to taste
DIRECTIONS:
Brew a really strong cup of coffee or espresso.

Pour 6 ounces cold milk in milk frother and froth until rich and velvety. Or, heat the milk on the stove or in the microwave until steaming, and beat it with a whisk. You want to get tiny bubbles

Use a spoon to retain the microbubbles on top of the steamed milk and pour the bottom 2/3 of the steamed milk into the cup.

Top the latte with the remaining bubbles by gently pouring or spooning them on top of the steamed milk.

cortado

INGREDIENTS:
• 2 shots of espresso
• 2 ounces of milk
DIRECTIONS:
In Spanish, the word “cortado” means “cut" (this refers to the milk “cutting through” the espresso) and is generally served in a small gibraltar glass (holds about 4.5 ounces).

Brew 2 shots of espresso into a small glass.

Steam milk.

Lightly froth steamed milk until it's increased a just bit in volume and texture. Pour milk into your espresso and enjoy!

macchiato

INGREDIENTS:
• 2 shots of espresso
• 2 ounces of milk
DIRECTIONS:
The word “macchiato” means “stained” in Italian, meaning that
the dark espresso is stained by the milk foam on top.

Brew 2 shots of espresso into a cup or glass.

Steam and froth milk.

Gently place milk froth (dry foam) on top of the espresso. You should use about ¼ cup foam for one drink.
