Director of Coffee

SUMMARY: We are looking to hire a full-time, experienced Director of Coffee reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer. The Director of Coffee is primarily responsible for refining and continuously improving BH Coffee’s Coffee Program. The position is primarily responsible for directing all activities related to the procurement and roasting of green coffee, including coffee sourcing, and purchasing, operational efficiencies, coffee certifications, training team members and customers on coffee roasting/extraction, and coffee related initiatives.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Chief Operating Officer to plan and execute green coffee purchases, considering market conditions, budgets and forecasts, inventory levels and logistics.
  • Analyze and forecast company green coffee position in conjunction with Chief Operating Officer, alert Senior Production Planner of any potential delays.
  • Keep track of all incoming samples for approval and coordinate with cupping team.
  • Manage logistics of green coffee shipments from Import vendors to Roasting facility in concert with Senior Production Planner.
  • Maintain and review everyday logs and assist in resolving all issues.
  • Review and recommend improvements of all SOP procedures and perform/troubleshoot on all activities.
  • Manage the sourcing of green coffees and maintain relationships with reputable green coffee brokers. Secure and build long term relationships with coffee producers and importers with a focus on quality and sustainability.
  • Help manage current coffee offerings, optimizing breadth of current selection while identifying opportunities for improvement and efficiency.
  • Support sales opportunities with blend matching/development and producing lab samples to secure new business.
  • Participate in marketing and PR efforts aimed towards promoting current and new coffees, with the goal of building awareness and driving sales.
  • Perform cuppings for sourcing, internal training, quality control and customer support activities. Includes green sample evaluation, production roast evaluation, blend optimization, staff, and customer education. Serve as a training resource for other team members, an information resource for the sales and marketing departments, and for customers and prospects.
  • Maintain blend recipes, roast profiles and all parameters required to produce great coffee.
  • Maintain brew recipes and recommended brewing guidelines on diverse brewing methods for sales and marketing departments.
  • Work with Roasting Manager and Operations team to continually improve coffee quality.
  • Work with Senior Manager Food Safety, Quality & Compliance to monitor the quality of production and brewing techniques, ensuring customers receive the most premium quality product.
  • Create and maintain key performance indicators and benchmarks.
  • Maintain and improve coffee laboratory and cupping room.
  • Act as liaison and project manager for continuous improvement, gap closures, and addressing evolving standards as it relates to coffee purchasing, and training.
  • Responsible for attending, participating, and sharing information in manufacturing meetings.
  • Ensure accuracy of department’s data reporting and file management.
  • Foster an environment of strong customer service, open communication, and partnership.
  • Always be mindful of and adhere to GMP’s, Quality and Food Safety requirements.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned by manager.
  • Skills and Abilities:
  • Extensive experience in cupping, sample roasting and roasting (roasting/blending/extraction), and knowledge of different brewing methods.
  • A strong comprehension of the C Market and forward contract business.
  • Strong palate for evaluating green coffee and roast/blend adjustments.
  • Q Grader certification a plus, but not required.
  • Strong mechanical and technical experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent time management skills.

Desired Requirements:

  • Ten years of industry related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination for education and experience.
  • Five years of professional experience in buying coffee.
  • Minimum seven years working in specialty coffee industry.
  • Minimum five years coffee roasting experience.
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, ERP, NetSuite a plus.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

  • Ability to lift to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to walk in an office setting and warehouse, production areas.

Salary Range: $85K - $110K DOE
Shift: Monday through Friday – 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
